works for sale

Alongside my installation and performance work, I create limited editions of original art work available for purchase.

If you’ve been following me for a while you might have seen some images from The Victory Book for Girls, a project where I stitch portraits of artists and creatives I admire and whose work has impacted my own. A big part of this project is about getting to know the artists who were not represented in the Art History books I studied as a girl and then on into art school, this is a book I would have loved to have read when I was a teenager.

A limited number of these stitched portraits are for sale, to purchase send me an email, angeladawnrowe@gmail.com

Frida Kahlo, Angela Rowe, 2022. Pencil and embroidery thread on repurposed textile hand dyed with avocado skins and stones. $500, free shipping within Aotearoa.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican artist who is well known for her deeply personal self portraits, she survived polio as a child and a disabling accident in her teens. As an eight year old I was hospitalised with meningitis, it was a surreal and isolating experience. I was alone for long periods of time with various little activities to occupy myself. The pain from the headaches was debilitating, and was almost inescapable until I received treatment. While not physically disabled by this experience I can relate to some of Kahlo’s stories from her time with, and recovery from polio.

Lee Miller, Angela Rowe, 2022. Pencil and embroidery thread on repurposed textile hand dyed with avocado skins and stones.

A portrait of Lee Miller from a Man Ray photograph, Lee Miller is drawn and hand stitched into repurposed cotton I have hand dyed with avocado skins and stones. The dye process takes two to three days, hass avocado skins produce a dark tannin colour, and the stones of avocados blush with a pinky peachy hue. The process yields variation in colour hue across the fabric and no two dye batches are the same, I work towards zero or low waste cutting and frame portraits with or without glass.

Lee Miller is framed and behind glass, frame size is 428mmw x 526mmh, $560, free shipping within Aotearoa.
