Cape, skirt and trouser ensemble.

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

I’m putting together a couple of outfits, matching separates mostly, to wear over the cooler months.  I’m getting a lot of use out of a pair of trousers I made using this pant pattern (sorry no photos yet..):

I thought I ought to make a couple more pairs of pants, get a bit colourful even!

So here’s the plan, make up this cape (it’s cut and ready to start)..

And this skirt from this sweet suit – I might make the suit top if I really get into the matching separates thing.

My fabric is a cool red woven wool synthetic blend, quite light weight with a nice drape to it, so I think it’s just right for the cape, and will also work nicely for a slim skirt and the trousers.  Not too heavy, so it should be perfect for autumn.  I also have a great stash of lining I was given, red and pink to use for this project.

Academy 4832… to line or not to line?

Monday, December 24th, 2012

I thought I’d share my current project, I’ve been putting together this, perhaps wearable toile, and I’m now considering lining it…  Here’s the pattern sleeve (isn’t it divine?) the dress I’m making is version three, the center black number, wide fold over collar, slim skirt and three quarter sleeves.

I have some construction photos, so you may see it coming together, and maybe get some idea of the fabric – and that is what’s making me think more – I have a feeling I’ll need to line it, as I know I’ll love to wear it.  The thing is, the fabric, bought at an op shop, is some kind of 100% synthetic, medium to heavy weighted woven material (in the burn test it immediately melted into a black blob).  It seems to be creating a good form, but I think it’s going to feel awful on skin!  It is just slightly see through, when I hold it to the light, and has no stretch or give at all.

And if I’m going to line it, I think this would be the moment to do it – and it will be my first lining project.  Eeek, I’m keen to do it, and I guess, after any tips or suggestions, I was thinking of cutting the bodice, sleeve, and skirt pieces out of lining material (I have recently inherited some fabulous red lining material – and plenty of it) sewing it together inside out, and then attaching it by hand or machine to the inside.. is the the typical approach?

More photos, I just love the low back collar and the pleats on the shoulders, are so simple and beautiful, I think!

in a dither.

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

So, summer is just around the corner.. I had all these great plans to whip up a swimsuit, a couple of beach set dresses, you know the ones that convert into a pair of shorts and a wee halter top when you cleverly undo the skirt?  Well, I guess I was going to get all this done instead of sleeping…

I’ve also become a bit excited as I’ve picked up some good fabric finds at the local Hospice shop, fabric remnants, at 2-3 meter lengths, for between $2-$4 per meter… good prices, some vintage fabrics, polyester and blended woven fabrics, and other older feeling (and smelling!) fabrics… can’t just leave the stuff there can I?!  Then there was the day I was fossicking in the fabric section at the opshop when a woman working there, brought out THRE BOXES OF FABRIC, saying I ought to look in them, I mentioned I was a sewer, and she goes on to say that there are boxes and boxes of fabric out the back…  I was all nonchalant, “Oh cool” and thinking, “Jeezus, don’t tell me that..”

When I pick new fabric and patterns, I tend to pull everything out, and do a bit of match making, this is a long and fluid process, I have found that sometimes the delay I experience between having what I need and making the time to sew gives me the chance to reconsider, test out the fabrics and make changes.  I also find this really exciting, so far, I’ve had enough zippers, etc. from nana and mums stash, AND when I was last at my mums place, I was saying how “All I’ve need to buy so far is thread!”  Mum said, “Oh why didn’t you say?  I have tins of thread you could use”.  “Aaah, yes, of course you do..” I thought, why on Earth didn’t I think of that?

So this is what I have lined up… and I’ll tell you where I’m at if you want to know.

This was a cool 3 meter piece of a slightly stretchy fabric, like the texture and the brown looked like a good beach/park outfit.  Fabric was $8, and the thread, zipper and facing was from the stash.
I also thought if I had enough, I could whip up a pair of pants or shorts.. using this:

The dress is all but done, and deserves another post entirely, and I deserve some kind of medal for effort.  I have enough fabric for a pair of shorts (wohoo!).

This is beautiful crepe de chine, and at 2 and a half meters, there’s enough for a frock!  Wohoo.  So, the dress on the left, (black and sleeveless) is the one I’m keen on, and I have it all cut out and ready to sew from a piece of purple, lightweight softly woven fabric (I know, I know, do a burn test..).  I don’t think I have enough for a full skirt, so might make (again) the white version on the left.

This is another piece of crepe, and another option for this dress, though, this is a smaller piece of fabric, just 2 meters.. so might allocate it to another project.  Nice fabric though huh.  And just look at that perfectly matching thread?

Now, onto some of the lovely woven fabric’s I found, this is I think a wool blend, it rubs slightly and when I did a burn test it didn’t go as black and form the kind of hard drop I expected, also it smelt like burning hair.  This pattern I picked up from the Vintage Textile Fair, and is complete and I love the unusual side panels.  And the collar.

I also found some nice woven pieces, black, dark blue AND pink.

These are some ideas, I’m yet to make a suit, it feels like a huge undertaking, but these are my options.  At the moment I’m loving the shape of the top pattern, I think the fit would be flattering.

Here is this other pattern I’ve been sitting on for ages, I love love love it.  And am more scared to start because I think it might be so lovely.  I know that doesn’t make sense, but I suppose it’s all extra pressure..  It will have to be perfect, absolutely.

So, it truns out that the wovens are all synthetics, no wrickles, easy care.. and here’s the pink, and doesn’t it just whisper, politely, Jacquie O?  I’m thinking a straight dress, with a clean cut jacket, will probably combine two patterns, I have some dress patterns that may work and I could try one of the jackets, above or perhaps a bolero, from this pattern.

Small person jumper upcycling…

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

I know you’re all thinking, what a choice jumper.

I mean, just LOOK at those colours!  But, alas, it’s too small, too small, even for my small ones…  I couldn’t part with it, so I decided on a bit of upcycling, I dis-assembled it, cut the body part down to the arm holes, and evened up the sleeves, gave it a quick run around hem…

And made a pair of cool wrist warmers and a scarflet for Rob, and doesn’t he just get all the comments now?

Fashion a Visual History – good reading

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

I get a bit carried away with books I Must Have, but this gets somewhat expensive, so in an effort to control my habit, I’ve been requesting and borrowing many more books from our library… great thing is, I have these wishlists all over the place, and slowly I borrow and read the books, so see if they belong here in our home..

With all my sewing fun times, I’ve been so tempted to get more and more books about fashion and sewing…

So, this book, Fashion; A Visual History from Reghency and Romance to Retro and Revolution by N J Stevenson.  And, no surprise, I Love It.

Here are some teasers, see what’s inside… 1920s.

Some of my most favourite outfits and designers. 1930s…

1940s…

And from my favourite era, 1950s..

and more.

and, yes, more still.

Into the 1960s now, I actually have a gingham stash, and well, seeing this, I’m hoping there’s enough for a shift dress!

Love the red dress too!

1960s sci fi, see?  Pretty much my all time best fashion era.

Chic.

Dior and Chanel would probably be my all time favourite designers, though really so different.  Can you have too many red dresses?  I think not.

And finally, the 1980s…

look who’s moved in

Look!  I have company, well, the quiet, just-standing-behind-you-here-while-you-sew kind of company!

I’ve been dreaming of having a dress form to work with now I’m making all these dresses, so I’m very excited, just need some time together and to pad her out a bit, sizing-wise she’s close but a bit skinny, probably on account of not having any children, heh.

musical hats

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Just have to share the best op shop find I’ve had in a while.  In the rough old hat basket with caps and beanies tossed in, I saw with amazement four beautiful vintage hats in apparently perfect condition!  When I took a closer look I found they were stuffed with sheet music – oh my god!  I know, what’s that all about?

Anyhow, I have a big head, and most often the loveliest old hats just don’t fit.  So, I was pretty happy that one fitted, this one, it’s navy blue with a ribbon of twisted or woven nylon around.

So I took them to the counter, and tried to pretend that I wasn’t that excited, and she sold them to me for $5 each, one is a pretty blue paisley style print that is a great little (though oversized) sun hat for Luna, a brown faux fur hat and another really lovely aqua cap style hat that I gave a friend.

She offered to take the paper out, but I thought they needed to be together, turns out they came from a theatre company, the sheet music seems to be all church songs.  How about that?

more vintage fabric cuffs

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

This one is mine!  When starting a new project I always have a few to giveaway to friends and of course something for myself.

I rally enjoyed working these out, a raided my fabric stash, which includes some beautiful vintage and retro fabrics, especially some sweet soft gingham.

Nice huh?

This gingham was from my nana’s stash, she made clothes for some ragdolls I still have out of it.

These are extra special, I have used some vintage duotone embroidery thread, also from a family stash…  Do you remember this post about raiding some of my tins?  There is only a limited range using this good stuff, can’t bear to use it all up…

This is my vintage rose fabric, soft and SO lovely.  Perfect for spring, and more embroidery.

I’ll be at Kraftbomb at the end of the month, come and grab yourself one there!

Picked up this pretty little number at the Auckland Vintage Textile Fair at the weekend.

And this pattern, unused and very sweet.  I have been looking out for some simple vintage dress patterns lately, I have plans to make one this year.  I also found a dress, it’s pretty stylish and home made by the looks, photo to come it does need a wash!

It was a fun morning out, very hot, so many beautiful things to look at and dream about taking home.  It was much more than textiles too, with costume vintage jewelry, heaps of hat boxes and haberdashery.  Patterns and other random antique and vintage articles like traveling cases, lasts for shoes, hat blocks, bags and accessories for every occasion and books.  Hanging out for the next one!
